Check Scanners and Mail Extractors

Selecting a Scanner

A critical element of any payment processing solution is the scanning hardware. This device is required to capture the images that will be used to extract payment data and to create an electronic deposit. From checks to coupons to full page invoices, scanners meet a diverse set of document and throughput requirements. Both sides of the check are captured during scanning to produce image files that meet all the requirements for Check 21 electronic processing.

With such a wide range of scanners available, how do you select the one that's right for you?  Critical features such as document handling, throughput and price may all come into play. Start by looking at your environment and volume requirements to narrow the field to a category of scanners:

Single Feed Scanners

Suitable for processing relatively few checks per day with no batch processing. Handles a single document at a time and provides an economic solution for very low volume check processing.  Priced under $1,000.

Receipt Printer With Integrated Scanner

Ideal in an environment where checks are accepted at a teller or cashier window. Performs like a standard POS receipt printer and includes an integrated single feed check scanner.  Prices average $1,500.

Low Volume Scanners

Fitting for most remote deposit applications processing one or more batches per day. Expressly designed for fast and easy operation. Throughputs vary from 30-100 documents per minute.  List prices range from $1-4K.

Full Page Scanners

Driven by the need to process full page invoices, these are duplex scanners with automatic document feeders. Can also accommodate checks and payment coupons.  Prices start at $2,500.

High Volume Transports

Exceeding most remote deposit requirements, high volume transports process hundreds of checks at a time, multiple times each day.  Throughputs range from 120-600 documents per minute.  List prices are $4-150K for tabletop, desk and floor models.
